In the year 1563, the Spanish conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado drew the boundaries of what would later be the City of Cartago between the Coris and Purires rivers. This fact is considered the beginning of the colony and the settlement of what became the provincial capital until the beginning of the 19th century.
By the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, the city had some 40 quadrants and delineated streets that were already beginning to be cobbled.
The city of Cartago has had to face the consequences of strong earthquakes such as those of 1841 and 1910; The latter almost completely destroyed it and as a result of which he suppressed the use of adobe and bahareque as construction material, giving way to houses made of wood and sheet metal.
