gandoca-manzanillo wildlife refugee

Located to the southeast of the Caribbean coast, between the mouth of the Cocles River and the Sixaola River, this refuge has an extension of 5,013 terrestrial hectares and 4,436 marine ones.

It has an enviable biodiversity in fauna and flora, with a significant number of species exclusive to the marine environment.

It is a mixed wildlife refuge, as it occupies state and private property.

The marine and terrestrial environments of Gandoca-Manzanillo provide a very diverse habitat that allows the permanence of a large number of species of huge trees and monkeys, as well as birds, amphibians and reptiles.

The mangrove swamp of the Gandoca estuary is vital for various species of waterfowl and for the reproduction and survival of the tarpon, the most important for sport fishing in the Costa Rican Caribbean, and the manatee (in danger of extinction).
